Compassion-Based Practices in Grief Therapy

Working with people who have experienced significant losses can be emotionally intense and difficult, especially in situations where the loss itself is ongoing or where the ramifications of the loss have a continuous ripple effect for clients. This session will build upon the components of compassion (mindfulness, presence, and common humanity) in a practical way, offering various compassion-based practices and skills for effective support of grieving clients in a way that is sustainable for clinicians.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Explore specific compassion-based practices that can be helpful to grieving clients;
  • Describe the role of sustainability related to a compassionate stance in situations where grief is chronic, intense, and/or exceptionally difficult; and
  • Explore the GRACE model of compassionate response.
